What's wrong with the" Jamaican Education" system Part 1
A bad workman blames his tools. As an educator myself I have seen how educators are treated. "Students are failing!" BLAME THE TEACHER. "Class sizes are too large." CUT THE INVESTMENT TO SCHOOLS. "Students are not passing Mathematics and English" TEACHERS NEED TO SACRIFICE THE SUMMERS.
So we as educators have heard it all. But why is the system blaming its own equipment. If one refuses to invest and communicate with us as educators, one should expect a different outcome to our current educational system. I am not bashing the system but outlining areas needing improvement.
1. BETTER PAY FOR TEACHERS
A teacher with a bachelors of Education makes roughly $130,000 to $150,000. And yes I know many are going to cry saying that our benefits as educators are good. But a one time payment of money does not take away from the fact that our pay cannot cover the cost of our daily living. Housing, transportation, Loans and Food are just some of the many costs that are to come out of our pay on a monthly basis. As inflation eats away from the small amount we make as educators we are left with little to nothing at the end. Quoting Agent Sasco " As me get the money it done!"
Not to forget many teachers have to buy equipment for labs, sba and other things for themselves in order for their class to function properly. So please do not argue when you see a teacher holding extra classes for some extra money.
But I could go on and on about the issue of payment for teachers but one thing I can say, " A system such as this will cause many teachers to find it hard to survive and this is one MAIN reason why many of our best and brightest have left"
